The oldest bonsai tree in the world is Ficus retusa Linn, over 1,000 years old. It lives in a museum in a small town in Italy. It didn't survive by accident. For over a millennium, a line of artists have cared for it, watered it, pruned it, and turned it toward the light, every day, for centuries. The tree did the living. The artist did the knowing.
